Merrick's Art // Style + Sewing for the Everyday Girl: Vests

During these transitioning weeks when the weather is cool in the mornings and warm in the afternoon, light layers are your best friend. We're closing in on November, so of course I want to wear layers, so I've found that vests are a good in between to make your outfit feel cozier but not killing you with heatstroke.

I've added a few vests to my closet this season, so today I'm sharing my three favorites, all of which are super versatile and will work all through Fall, Winter, and into Spring.

1. MILITARY VEST (also known as a utility vest or anorak vest)

I love the masculinity that this vest adds to an outfit, and I particularly love adding it to a dress since the contrast of feminine and masculine is so good. You can typically find them in khaki, green or navy, but I love the unexpected neutral that olive green adds to an outfit.

There are a lot of good options out there, but I love this basic one, this slightly rugged one, or this lighter green one. Also this one and this one are both under $35!

2. DENIM VEST. I steered clear of this trend for a while, thinking it looked too 80's, but when it's styled the right way it adds a really nice modern layer. Just like light wash chambray shirts and denim jackets are the most modern and on-trend right now, denim vests are the same. This one and this one (under $35!) are both good choices.

3. SHEARLING VEST. I love the luxe feel that this vest gives to any outfit, especially a really basic one. I spotted this one in Shop Red Clover and instantly loved it. I wanted it to be the focus of my outfit, so I paired it with all neutrals -- but it would also look great with all black, or over a fitted dress with heels.
