4TH OF JULY OUTFIT INSPIRATION

TEE  ||  SIMILAR CHAMBRAY SKIRT HEREHERE and HERE  ||  FLATS  (under $30, and come in black and nude too!)

I never cared much about the Fourth of July until we moved to California. But man, this place does it right with a giant parade, lots of fun events, and fireworks on the beach. Everyone gets so into it with decorated bikes and wagons, dressing up, and everyone outside BBQing, walking to the parade, and throwing parties. It's basically everyone's favorite day of the year around here.

Just don't try to park within a mile and a half of the beach, because it is bumper to bumper cars parked everywhere. People even rent out their driveways for the day cause people are willing to pay $40 just for somewhere to park.

With all that excitement, I can't help but love it now. Even better, my sister and her family have made it their yearly tradition to come visit us over the Fourth. This year will be their third year and it's always the best to have cousin and sister time!

But even though I like to dress in red, white and blue for the Fourth, I pick pieces that are versatile enough to wear the rest of the year. I just recently picked up these flats and will wear them all summer long, but they're also the perfect festive piece for the holiday (they also come in black and nude though!)

This skirt is also a fun choice you could pair with a white top, or you could do white denim with a navy and white striped top and these sneakers. I also love a white and red striped top (it feels so summery!) or a navy gingham blouse, both of which would look great with blue or white denim. Or gosh, I just love this red gingham!

DIY FRIDAY: EASTER TABLE INSPIRATION + PAINTED GINGHAM PLACEMATS

created in partnership with World Market | photos by rad and happy

Easter is early this year and coming up in only four weeks! So today I teamed up with World Market to share a super easy and beautiful table scape. I love a beautiful table and think it makes my dinner that much better, so I always try to make a little effort to make it special and pretty. Here's a few ideas to get your table ready for Easter:

1. Fresh flowers. There's nothing that brightens up a table like a vase (or three!) of fresh flowers. If my table scape is colorful, I keep the flowers neutral, like these white hydrangeas and blush roses. But if my tablescape is more neutral, I love adding a pop of color with some bright blooms. Also, if I'm not in the mood or running out of time to bake something, store bought cupcakes are instantly prettier and personalized if you stick some fresh flowers in them.

2. Make it your own with a DIY project. I love adding something handmade to my table because it makes it unique and puts a little personal stamp on it. When I was coming up with ideas for
my Easter table, I wanted something springy and fresh, but not overly pastel or Easter. I've been crazy about gingham this spring, so I had the idea to paint some white placemats with a simple gingham pattern. I'm sharing the easy DIY below!

3. Try some fresh fruit. Especially for spring, fresh fruit is so beautiful and colorful and instantly adds life to your table. I chose lemons because I love a yellow and blue color combo.

4. Ground it with earthy tones. A colorful or bright white table scape can be so gorgeous, but adding some earthy neutrals really helps the colors or whites pop, and adds depth. I added some with these darling bunny napkin rings and nests (they also have these cute ones for slightly cheaper!) from World Market. The eggs are (I think) from pottery barn last year, but I also think Jordan Almonds would be so cute inside the nests!

4 WAYS TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF DURING THE HOLIDAYS

POLKA DOT PAJAMAS (SIMILAR HERE)  ||  RED LIPSTICK  ||  SIMILAR EARRINGS  ||  DRESS MADE BY ME (SIMILAR HERE, HERE and HERE)  ||  HEELS

During the holidays, it seems like everyone is going a million miles a minute. I'm completely guilty of it too, with events to attend, gifts to purchase and wrap, friends to see, meals to cook, family activities to do...they're all great things, they just seem to all pile up at once and leave me feeling frazzled and exhausted. The other day I was taking my makeup off and discovered I had huge dark circles under my eyes...clearly all of this busyness is taking a toll on me and it was time to do something about it. The last thing I want is to go through the holidays feeling and looking like a zombie...

Below are 4 ways I'm taking care of myself during the holidays, and how you should too:

1. Take a nap. When I have a million things on my to-do list, it's hard for me to put it away for twenty minutes and grab a power nap. But whenever I do, I'm always so glad I did and it gives me that little boost to keep me going through the day. I set my alarm clock for 25 minutes (giving myself 5 minutes to fall asleep), turn on a white noise app, and power nap for 20 minutes. It's the perfect pick me up. Any longer than that has the complete opposite effect, so only do 20 minutes!

2. Do a face mask. I love doing face masks because they're quick and easy to put on, and you can take care of your skin while multitasking. I'm trying to do one at least once a week, and they leave my skin feeling as soft as a baby! GLAMGLOW sent me a few of theirs to try out, and I tried their hydrating ThirstyMud mask since my skin easily dries out during the colder months. I instantly felt rejuvenated and spent the day just rubbing my face because it was so soft and smooth -- and my dark circles were gone the next day! GLAMGLOW has a ton of other amazing masks that help with anti-aging, clearing or brightening your complexion, or just cleansing. Plus they're selling their sets for the holidays in the coolest little packages so it would make a fun gift set for your friends who need a little relaxing "me" time!

3. Get a pedicure. An hour to yourself, a foot and leg massage, and pretty feet...who can say no to this during the holidays? Plus I'm sure those feet need a break from all the running around you're doing. Do yourself a favor and book an appointment already. The bigger I get in this pregnancy, the more strain I'm feeling on my feet, so you can bet I'll be adding a pedicure to my calendar this week.

4. Read a book.  Sometimes during those frazzled, busy moments, you just need to step away from life for a little bit, and what better way than to delve into a good book? I started this book a few months ago and haven't picked it up in a while, so I'm going to follow my own advice and get back into it during the holidays. Maybe while my face mask dries ;)

What are you doing to take care of yourself during the holidays??

HOW TO HOST A GINGERBREAD HOUSE PARTY

When I was growing up, every year during the holidays my mom would host a gingerbread making party. It is one of my favorite holiday memories, and just a fun and low-key party you can throw together pretty quickly. I did it up through high school, and even a few times after we got married with some of our couple friends, so don't think this party is just for little kids!

Here's a few tips to making your party successful and stress-free (and below I'll show you how to make a house, and I'll share my mom's icing recipe):

1. Keep your crowd small. When I was growing up, my two sisters and I each got to invite one friend, so there were only ever six of us. We had seven kids for this party (plus three moms), and I'd recommend staying somewhere around there. Also this kind of party is best for slightly older kids and up...Fos is three and any younger than that needs a lot of help and gets bored easily.

2. Have an icing bag for every child. Last year I didn't have enough bags, and figured that sharing would be fine. But it was chaotic and frustrating for the kids when they wanted icing and couldn't have it right that minute. Also, I highly recommend having decorating couplers and real icing bags for everyone...I've tried an icing tip in the corner of a plastic ziploc bag and the tip doesn't stay put, which leads to a lot of frustration. And, this year I had the idea to put clips on the ends of the bags to keep icing from going everywhere, and this made a huge difference. Everyone stayed really clean!

3. Ask everyone to bring candy to share. As the host, you can provide all the houses and icing, and then ask everyone to bring a bag or two of decorating candy to share. Of course you can decorate with anything, but here are a few of my favorites we've used over the years:

  • pull and peel licorice (makes great strands for christmas lights, bows for wreaths, lines for front paths, etc)
  • pretzels (great for fences or roof shingles)
  • red hots
  • mini m&m's (or chocolate covered sunflower seeds (from trader joes), which we used this year)
  • gumdrops
  • marshmallows (perfect for making snowmen in the yard)

4. Prep the night before. Get all the graham crackers cut (instructions below) and cardboard squares covered in foil the night before. You can even make the icing and build all the houses the night before, although it's not completely necessary since the icing dries very quickly. But definitely all the houses should be made before the guests arrive so they can jump right into decorating!

5. Let the parents join in on the fun! My friends were hesitant to have me build them a house to decorate, but since the kids were all pretty self sufficient, it was fun for us to just sit, chat, and decorate our houses. This party is not just for kids!

The trick to these gingerbread houses is the icing! This recipe is basically like glue, and makes for a really sturdy house that won't collapse as you decorate it.

ROYAL ICING RECIPE

3 egg whites (must be at room temperature)
1 lb powdered sugar
1/2 tsp cream of tartar

Place all three ingredients in room temp mixing bowl and beat until icing is VERY STIFF.  After I think the icing is ready, I mix for about 5 more minutes.*

Keep bowl of icing covered with a wet cloth as it goes hard very rapidly.

*this really stiff icing is great for making sturdy houses, but makes it difficult for kids to squeeze out of the icing bags if it's too stiff. I made two batches of icing; the first I mixed for the extra 5 minutes and used to build 10 houses. The second batch, I skipped the final five minutes of mixing so it was still stiff, but much more manageable for decorating, and used that to fill 10 icing bags.

Now to prep your houses. I used regular HoneyMaid Graham Crackers, and cut them with a serrated bread knife. You'll cut three sizes of crackers -- square, pointed, and rectangular. Each house needs two of each of these pieces. Follow the pictures below to build your house.

Now invite those friends over, crank up that Christmas music, light a festive candle, and it's time for a gingerbread house party!

HOLIDAY PAJAMAS

MY PAJAMAS  (on sale!) ||  B's SHIRT + PANTS  ||  FOS'S ONESIE

One of my favorite traditions of Christmas is buying new Christmas pajamas. It's a tradition that a lot of families have, and I love spending the time choosing new sets for my boys for Christmas. This year I picked up a new pair for myself, and although I still haven't, I'm debating whether to snag a pair for Philip as well.

I've searched my favorite stores and rounded up the very cutest holiday pajamas for men, women, boys, girls, and baby.
