21 STOCKING STUFFER IDEAS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Can you believe that Christmas is this week? I'm still kind of in shock about it -- the season always speeds by so quickly! Hopefully by now you have most, if not all of your Christmas shopping done.

Stocking stuffers are some of my favorite gifts, but I also almost always leave them til the last minute. If you're the same, I've rounded up 21 ideas, all from Amazon and all on Prime so they can be at your door before Christmas morning. You'll be glad you don't have to set foot in a retail store until after the holidays...it's a mad house out there right now!

WHAT TO PACK FOR YOUR HOLIDAY VACATION - 9 ESSENTIALS!

OUTFIT DETAILS:  BLACK TUNIC  ||  DSTLD DENIM  ||  MINNETONKA SLIPPERS

Traveling for the holidays can be tricky. We did it for so many years, and especially with kids it's hard to fit everything in plus gifts if you're bringing those along. So learning to pack the essentials that will keep you looking great over the holidays, cover you for all unexpected events that might arise, and keep your luggage small is super important.

Zappos is one of my go-to's for shopping because with their crazy fast shipping I can pick something out and have it on my doorstep the next day. Perfect for any last minute things you might need for your Christmas vacation!

Here are 9 essentials you should have in your suitcase for your holiday travel:

1. Two pairs of versatile pants. I chose my two-toned leather leggings and a dark wash pair of jeans. They'll go with everything and both of them can easily be dressed up or dressed down.

2. A pretty poncho. Ponchos are huge this season and there are so many good ones to choose from. I picked this one up from Zappos and I love how it's basically just a fashionable blanket that's socially acceptable to wear around in public. It's easy to throw on over either your jeans or leggings, and perfect for going out, or just staying home and snuggling on the couch (both of which you'll probably be doing over your holiday break).

3. A couple of versatile tees. I chose a basic striped one, this oversized scoop hem tunic (that I'm wearing above), and a plain white tee (I'm obsessed with this one and it's only $8!). I chose pieces that are all in the same color family so they're easy to mix and match or layer under jackets or that poncho, and will make it easy to create a bunch of outfits while still keeping your suitcase really light.

4. Three pairs of shoes. I'm always an over-packer when it comes to shoes, so I've learned to choose pairs that can work for lots of different occasions. Choose one pair of nice flats that can be worn with both of your pants, one pair of ankle boots, and one pair of basic black heels. These three shoes will cover you for any and all occasions during your vacation.

5. Jammies and slippers. Since Christmas time has lots of occasions to relax and be in pajamas (Christmas eve, Christmas morning, and plenty of other times), bring along a pair of festive pj's and some cozy slippers to keep you snuggly and warm, and also cute for all those pictures that are sure to come. I'm obsessed with these Minnetonka slippers because they're so soft and warm, but don't make my feet hot because the back is open. I wear them all day long every day.

6. One coat. Choose a basic and versatile coat you can wear every day during your vacation (without it being obvious you're wearing the same coat). This simple black double-breasted wool coat is so classic and chic, but will also keep you toasty warm.

7. Two bags. Make them both neutral, and bring one casual one, and one dressy one.

8. One or two hats. I've become such a hat lover in the last year or so and never travel without one anymore. They're great for looking put together, keeping your head warm, or covering up dirty hair. My favorite is this gray fedora since it's the perfect size for every day, but if you're going somewhere really cold, make sure you also throw in a snow hat with a cute pom-pom on the top! Oh, and when you're packing a fedora, roll up a pair of jeans, stuff them inside the hat, and then set the hat at the bottom of your suitcase and pack around it. This will help it keeps its shape!

9. Little Black Dress. Since it's the holidays, I'm sure you'll have at least one nice place to go during your stay, so a LBD is a must. I chose one that's stretchy so it makes it feel more casual and it can be dressed up with your heels, or dressed down with your poncho, a hat, and your ankle boots.

LAST MINUTE SHOPPING FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

OUTFIT #1 DETAILS: WRAP COAT  ||  BLACK AND WHITE SWEATER  ||  PLAID BUTTON UP  ||  SIMILAR SKIRT  ||  TIGHTS  ||  SIMILAR ANKLE BOOTS  ||  SIMILAR CLUTCH

OUTFIT #2 DETAILS: PAJAMA PANTS  ||  SWEATSHIRT (sooo soft!)

We're nearly down to crunch time! It seems that every website I jump on has alerts about the last day of shopping for it to arrive before Christmas, and it makes me feel frazzled just seeing those flashing words!

I just finished my holiday shopping a few days ago (whew, it feels so good!), but for those of you still plowing through, I'll make it easy on you and tell you to just go to Old Navy. It's a one-stop shop for gifts right now so you can check off everyone on your list! Plus, if you're looking for something to wear on Christmas Eve, or New Years Eve, there's also room in your cart for  for yourself...I know I can't get through the holidays without gifting myself something!

I stopped by a few days ago and not only did I find this beautiful sage green wrap coat that I immediately snagged for myself (plus a sweater), I found a bunch of gifts that are perfect for the whole family.

Your brother or husband will love this chunky cardigan, and your daughters or nieces will freak out over this darling fur vest or glitter ballet flats. If you need something for those little boys, I love these boots, or this super handsome fair isle sweater. Or if your boys are anything like mine, they'll love a cozy hat.

When it comes to sisters, girlfriends, or moms, Old Navy is seriously a gold mine. I found so many perfect things there -- this cute fringe bag, a pair of classic pointed flats, this pretty dress, tons of beautiful scarves, or a plaid button up. Any girl would love any of these!

Now go finish up your holiday shopping already!

RAIDING MY SISTER'S CLOSET: WHAT TO WEAR TO A CASUAL HOLIDAY PARTY

OUTFIT DETAILS:  PLAID TOP (only $44! wearing size XS)  ||  FAUX FUR SCARF (under $30!)  ||  FAUX LEATHER LEGGINGS (under $40!)  ||  ANKLE BOOTS

I've shared a few holiday looks over the past few weeks for my Guide to the Holidays. I'm completely obsessed with wearing beautiful dresses, but the reality is that most of the parties I'm attending this year are really casual. So today since my sisters and I are talking about holiday party style, I chose more of a casual style.

But, just because the party is casual doesn't mean it shouldn't be festive! These are actually the most fun outfits to come up with because you can take casual up a few notches and wear festive pieces that are a little trickier to style the rest of the year.

I found these two-tone leather leggings at Nordstrom a few weeks ago and had to have them. I own a pair of full leather leggings, but the two-tone makes them a little easier to wear for every day. I wanted something festive since we're going to a holiday party after all, so I paired them with a green plaid top. It's subtly festive with the stripes of red and green, but can easily be worn after Christmas...and it's only $44!

By itself, the leather leggings and plaid top creates a fun and festive look, but the outfit just needed something else to make it special. I chose this killer faux fur infinity scarf (that's under $30!), but if fur is not your thing, try a big sparkly statement necklace, like this one.

Then I topped off the whole outfit with red lips and a casual but sleek ankle boot. A pair of heels would make the outfit too dressy, so ankle boots or a pair of slightly dressier flats are your best option.

HOW TO HOST A GINGERBREAD HOUSE PARTY

When I was growing up, every year during the holidays my mom would host a gingerbread making party. It is one of my favorite holiday memories, and just a fun and low-key party you can throw together pretty quickly. I did it up through high school, and even a few times after we got married with some of our couple friends, so don't think this party is just for little kids!

Here's a few tips to making your party successful and stress-free (and below I'll show you how to make a house, and I'll share my mom's icing recipe):

1. Keep your crowd small. When I was growing up, my two sisters and I each got to invite one friend, so there were only ever six of us. We had seven kids for this party (plus three moms), and I'd recommend staying somewhere around there. Also this kind of party is best for slightly older kids and up...Fos is three and any younger than that needs a lot of help and gets bored easily.

2. Have an icing bag for every child. Last year I didn't have enough bags, and figured that sharing would be fine. But it was chaotic and frustrating for the kids when they wanted icing and couldn't have it right that minute. Also, I highly recommend having decorating couplers and real icing bags for everyone...I've tried an icing tip in the corner of a plastic ziploc bag and the tip doesn't stay put, which leads to a lot of frustration. And, this year I had the idea to put clips on the ends of the bags to keep icing from going everywhere, and this made a huge difference. Everyone stayed really clean!

3. Ask everyone to bring candy to share. As the host, you can provide all the houses and icing, and then ask everyone to bring a bag or two of decorating candy to share. Of course you can decorate with anything, but here are a few of my favorites we've used over the years:

  • pull and peel licorice (makes great strands for christmas lights, bows for wreaths, lines for front paths, etc)
  • pretzels (great for fences or roof shingles)
  • red hots
  • mini m&m's (or chocolate covered sunflower seeds (from trader joes), which we used this year)
  • gumdrops
  • marshmallows (perfect for making snowmen in the yard)

4. Prep the night before. Get all the graham crackers cut (instructions below) and cardboard squares covered in foil the night before. You can even make the icing and build all the houses the night before, although it's not completely necessary since the icing dries very quickly. But definitely all the houses should be made before the guests arrive so they can jump right into decorating!

5. Let the parents join in on the fun! My friends were hesitant to have me build them a house to decorate, but since the kids were all pretty self sufficient, it was fun for us to just sit, chat, and decorate our houses. This party is not just for kids!

The trick to these gingerbread houses is the icing! This recipe is basically like glue, and makes for a really sturdy house that won't collapse as you decorate it.

ROYAL ICING RECIPE

3 egg whites (must be at room temperature)
1 lb powdered sugar
1/2 tsp cream of tartar

Place all three ingredients in room temp mixing bowl and beat until icing is VERY STIFF.  After I think the icing is ready, I mix for about 5 more minutes.*

Keep bowl of icing covered with a wet cloth as it goes hard very rapidly.

*this really stiff icing is great for making sturdy houses, but makes it difficult for kids to squeeze out of the icing bags if it's too stiff. I made two batches of icing; the first I mixed for the extra 5 minutes and used to build 10 houses. The second batch, I skipped the final five minutes of mixing so it was still stiff, but much more manageable for decorating, and used that to fill 10 icing bags.

Now to prep your houses. I used regular HoneyMaid Graham Crackers, and cut them with a serrated bread knife. You'll cut three sizes of crackers -- square, pointed, and rectangular. Each house needs two of each of these pieces. Follow the pictures below to build your house.

Now invite those friends over, crank up that Christmas music, light a festive candle, and it's time for a gingerbread house party!

AN EASY AND KID-FRIENDLY CHRISTMAS TABLESCAPE IDEA

Right before we left for San Francisco, we put up our Christmas decorations. The only thing we didn't decorate was the table, and when we came home it looked so bare and sad compared to the rest of our festive house, so this week we took care of that and dressed it up with the help of World Market.

I love having a pretty tablescape, but also want to make sure I don't put anything on there that is super breakable or that my boys would want to play with. So this year we went with a woodsy theme some pretty fresh greens from Trader Joes, handmade paper stars, and then some gorgeous table settings from World Market. It's festive and chic, but also super kid friendly (as long as your kids are okay using glass dishes).

The best part is that besides the time it took to make the paper stars (they're not hard, just a little time consuming), this all came together in a few minutes. Now I'm just hoping I remember to spray my greens every few days so they don't die on me...wish  me luck, because I am the worst with plants!

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE: MY TOP 4 GIFT IDEAS FOR KIDS

With the millions of toys out there, you would think that shopping for kids would be really easy, right? The only problem is that after buying hundreds of toys over the years (for both my own children and my nieces and nephews and friends), I've discovered that not all toys are created equal. There are lots of toys out there that are popular, fun, well made, and so cute, but they don't have longevity. There is nothing better than picking out a toy that they'll play with every day for the next year....and nothing more frustrating than choosing one that they get bored of in less than five minutes.

So here are my top four categories of gifts that are sure to be around for the long haul.

the images below are clickable, so click to shop, or find direct text links below

In the toys category, I chose matchbox cars because my boys have played with them their whole lives and still love them, this fantastic mini shopping cart that my friend owns and instantly attracts every other child (plus it's well-made and not flimsy!), and this baby stroller. Because I've never met a child who doesn't love to push around a babydoll or animal in it. Plus this collapses so you can store it easily. I also should have included these dolls in this category since I had an American Girl doll growing up and played with her for years

My next category is books. You can never run out of books to read, so book gifts are definitely a good option, especially if you get a series. B and I started reading The Boxcar Children series earlier this year and we both instantly fell in love with the sweet characters and their fun and innocent adventures. I definitely recommend these for boys or girls. The Little House on the Prairie books are more geared toward girls, except Farmer Boy, which I read to B last year and we both loved. But it's a fantastic series too. We also love the Magic Tree House books, which teach great things about history! In addition to these series for older kids, we love the LITTLE KIDS BIG BOOK OF... books, and the BabyLit books, which are geared toward smaller kids.

Next up is outdoor toys. We've bought a million outdoor toys, but the ones that are the most loved are their scooters and the balance bike. The micro scooter is three-wheeled and has really great mobility -- my 5 year old absolutely loves his. And when you're choosing a balance bike, make sure you get one that has an adjustable seat (without needing to use a tool), since that makes life much easier!

And finally, Lego's. I'm pretty sure my family would die without Lego's. My husband grew up playing with them, and my boys inherited all his old bricks last year. We've since added to the collection and they play with their Lego's for at least an hour every single day. Most days it's several hours. They're amazing for fine motor skills (we've seen huge improvements in F's fine motor skills since he switched from Duplos...although he still plays with those often), and unbelievable for fostering creativity. I'm constantly amazed the creations my boys invent and build. Plus, if you get the building sets (rather than just random bricks), it teaches them how to follow instructions in order to build. They are my favorite of their toys (except when I step on them)!

Any other great toys out there that we're missing out on?
