WHITE ON WHITE, SPORTY STYLE

If you follow me on instagram, you probably know how much white on white I've been wearing this season. Neutrals are huge this year, but the all white look is so fresh and crisp that it's my favorite of all the neutral looks for spring.

One of my favorite ways to wear the all-white trend is to add a little pop of color, and this time I did it with these pale pink sneakers from Rachel Zoe's new line at Zappos. I love sneakers, and I love how this pair makes my all white outfit a little more casual. Although you could easily throw on a pair of pale pink pumps and it would make the outfit instantly dressy!

I've been on the hunt for a new pair of white jeans for a few weeks, and since there's no way I'm braving the dressing rooms at a department store with three kids, I turned to Zappos to find a pair. I ordered a couple, tried them on at home, and then sent back the pairs I didn't like with their super easy and free returns. One of the pairs I tried was this pair from BlankNYC. I wanted to try them because I own a pair of their boyfriend jeans and they're the best jeans ever, and this new white pair didn't disappoint. They're so comfortable, perfectly fitted down my legs, not too thin, and a great ankle length. Plus they have a little raw hem at the ankle which is a fun, subtle detail. I'm pretty sure you'll be seeing them on repeat all summer long!

5 TIPS FOR SPRING CLEANING YOUR CLOSET

When the weather starts warming up, one of my very favorite things to do is spring clean my closet. I love pulling out all the sweaters and boots, and replacing them with sandals and sundresses that have been packed away for the last few months. And of course it's always fun to add a few new things to the mix once your closet is all emptied out!

So I've teamed with Zappos today to share 5 tips for cleaning out your closet, and then share a few spring essentials to help refresh your wardrobe after a long winter! Zappos has free 2-day shipping, so after that closet is clean, you can have your new items in your closet in a flash!

Here we go -- 5 tips for spring cleaning your closet:

1. Pull everything out of your closet and take a mental inventory. It might seem like a daunting task, and for those of you with bigger closets than me it might be extra daunting, but it's really helpful to actually see everything you own. Cause goodness knows it's easy to forget what you have in your closet! And who knows -- you might find that top you've been searching for for the last few months ;)

2. Be honest with yourself about what you really wear. There are always a few pieces in my closet that I just can't let go of for some reason. I think, "I'll totally wear that this summer," when in reality it's sat unworn for the last two summers. A good rule of thumb (that I sometimes still break, obviously) is that if I haven't worn it in the last nine months (unless it's seasonal), then it's time to get rid of it.

3. Make piles. Although your room will be a complete disaster as you spring clean your closet, making piles will help organize the chaos. I make a "Throw Away" pile, a "To Sell/Donate" pile, and a "Needs Repairs/Alterations" pile, and it helps me keep everything somewhat organized and contained as I clean. You can see my piles and stacks in the pictures above.

4. Sort your clothing as you put it back in your closet. After I clean my closet, I want it to stay clean and organized as long as possible. The best way I've found to keep it organized is to sort it by item -- skirts all hung together, then dresses, then blazers and jackets, and then regular tops, and then sort by color within each of these categories (I do it in rainbow order). Then as I put items away at the end of the day, I know just where they belong. I also store my shoes in these boxes from The Container Store, and not only does it keep them protected, it gives me more storage since I can stack them on top of each other inside my closet.

5. Refresh your wardrobe. Once you have everything sorted and organized by item type and color, it's easy to recognize any gaps you might have in your closet. You can clearly see that you don't own anything in cobalt blue (but you want to!), or you don't have a single white sundress (and obviously that's a summer essential!) So now comes the fun part -- refreshing your wardrobe with a few new things! Zappos has an amazing selection of clothing, handbags, shoes, and accessories, so they'll help you fill in the gaps so easily. They also have free 2-day shipping, so your closet will be refreshed and ready for spring in no time at all!

As I did my closet spring cleaning this year (which you can see snippets of in the pictures above) I realized I didn't own a pink purse. And since this is the season of pink for me, that was first on my list of purchases.  I found this gorgeous crossbody Michael Kors bag from Zappos, and it's the perfect investment piece to refresh my wardrobe now, but will also last me for years, since I'm trying to be better about buying quality items that won't fall apart before next summer!

I paired my new bag with an all-white look for summer -- white denim and a white eyelet top -- and a pair of simple espadrille wedges, all of which are spring and summer essentials in my closet too!

Now go clean out your closet, and then refresh it with some fun pieces with Zappos! Which items are top on your "to-buy-for-spring" list??

6 WAYS TO STYLE A WHITE BUTTON UP (PART 1)

Whenever I read articles or books that talk about closet essentials, a white button up blouse is mentioned. I always felt like it was more of a mature item that I didn't really need in my closet, but a few weeks ago I finally picked this one up at Old Navy and I've been wearing it like crazy. It's the perfect layering piece, goes with everything, can instantly dress up or add class to an outfit, and is flattering on everyone. So I'm joining the masses and saying that this is a piece you must have in your closet.

Today I want to show you a few ways to wear it. Since I'm sharing six ways total, I'm splitting it up into two posts, so check back on Thursday to see three more ways to wear it!

First up, business casual. I get reader requests often, asking me to do more work appropriate attire, so this one is for you. Layer the button up under a structured blazer and pair it with pointed toe pumps and a classic style bag. If you want it completely work appropriate, swap the jeans out for a pair of patterned pixie pants!

Next up, Casual. The way to dress down a structured piece is by wearing something completely opposite, whether it be edgy, super casual, or very unstructured.  I went for edgy and casual with a baseball cap and converse sneakers, and then paired them with some fun leather pants to add a bit of edge. Another great option would be a flowy maxi skirt like this one, or super distressed denim.

And lastly, wear it as a neutral. Or in other words, use it to tone down your crazy clothes. This skirt from Shabby Apple is super loud, colorful, and metallic -- definitely not subtle or neutral. So I threw on that white button up to neutralize the outfit. Try pairing it with super bright tights in the fall and winter, or with patterned pants or shorts!

Don't forget to check back on Thursday to see my other three looks!

3 WAYS TO WEAR YOUR WHITE JEANS AFTER LABOR DAY

Do any of you still follow that silly rule about no white jeans after Labor Day? If you do, it's time you stopped. My white jeans are one of my most comfortable and versatile pairs of pants in my closet, so there's no way I'm putting them away for the next nine months until summer rolls around again.

The key to wearing your white jeans after Labor Day is wearing them so they are Fall and Winter appropriate, so it makes sense to be wearing them (the same applies to any light colored pants). Here's a few tips to wearing them well all Fall and Winter:

1. Layer, Layer, Layer

During the summer, a lightweight tee or tank is perfect with your white jeans. So during the Fall and Winter, try the opposite and throw on a bunch of layers. A jacket, scarves, boots, socks -- they're all good choices that will instantly make your jeans feel cool-weather appropriate.

2. Classic Black and White

Adding accents of black with white jeans instantly gives your jeans less of a summery look. Since it's still scorching hot during September here in Southern California, I went with black ankle boots, a white blouse, and a black bag, but as it cools down they'll be perfect with a black leather jacket, winter coat, or sweater!

3. Contrast

Keep those jeans from feeling summery by pairing them with pieces that are super winter-y -- a cable knit pullover sweater, over the knee boots, or a knitted beanie with a pom-pom are all good examples. Here I paired mine with a wool poncho and ankle boots for a cozy feel that would be perfectly appropriate for cold weather!

COBALT POP

photography by sara walk

A little white dress has become a summer staple for me, and I'm loving finding ways to wear this dress, both dressy and casual. I hadn't thought about wearing it with a super bright color though until I picked up these blue Steve Madden pumps at the Nordstrom anniversary sale. I love an all neutral outfit with a pop of color, so these blue pumps were just the thing to wear with my little white dress for an unexpected dressy look. Add a few little gold details and the outfit was complete!

How would you wear a pair of bright blue shoes??
