THE BEST PLACES TO BRUNCH IN ORANGE COUNTY, CA

Since I work during the week, Saturday's have become our special family days. We have a weekly tradition of brunch, and have spent the last year trying out a bunch of different spots in an effort to find our very favorite.

And even though we really try to dedicate our Saturdays to just family time, I have to admit that I'm always tempted to turn them into errand running days -- a chance to get everything done before the week starts again.

But Target, Costco, and grocery store runs are basically the last thing my kids want to do, or want me to do, on a Saturday (when we could be eating donuts), so they were maybe happier than me when we discovered Google Express. It's the best site that lets you shop your favorite stores all from the same app so you can buy the products you want from the stores you love, all from one place. It's pretty genius if you ask me. We have a specific kind of face wash and cream we use, specific Target diapers I like, and bulk toilet paper we always buy, and being able to shop for all of those at once and having all of them delivered for free the next day is a mama's dream come true.

All Saturday errands done with the click of a button? Check. Time to get back to our very important work of finding the very best chocolate croissant within a 5 mile radius ;)

So now I have two good things for you --

1. Google Express and I teamed up to give my readers $15 toward your first Google Express purchase now through July 31.* Use code MERRICK.

2. A list of our tried and true brunch spots in Orange County! If you live in the area or are traveling here during the summer, you must try them out.

C'est Si Bon bakery. If you're looking for an unbelievably amazing French bakery, this is it. Their fresh baguettes are out of this world, and they come fresh out of the oven every few minutes. If it's getting close to lunch time, get a make-your-own baguette sandwich and make sure to toast it! You also must get a chocolate croissant, because these are the best ones we've found.
The store is almost always packed, and there are very few tables, but it's one hundred percent worth it to wait around for a few minutes.

Anepolco. I'm typically more of a sweet brunch kind of girl (french toast, waffles, smoothies, donuts), but this place knocked my socks off. It's a Mexican French fusion cuisine, which is so unique, and every single dish I've tried has been unbelievably amazing. The Perdidos is my favorite, but the chilaquiles is also unreal. They also have dessert crepes that are super good if you finish your brunch and need something sweet to top it off. This one is close to Disneyland if you're staying around there!

Crema bakery cafe. It took us three tries to finally get into this place, but once we finally did it met all my expectations and then some. It has a restaurant and a bakery, both of which are so great. The restaurant tables are tucked in between two buildings on main street in Seal Beach (which is super pretty!), so you get a nice shady spot to eat your brunch. Get the breakfast crepe and get a pastry for dessert -- you won't be disappointed!

Rose bakery cafe. This is the cafe we go to probably the very most. It's down in Corona Del Mar, so it's probably the very farthest from us, but it's so worth the drive. Their breakfast burritos are better than any I've ever had -- my favorite is the country burrito, just make sure you sub out the potatoes for hashbrowns (because they're crunch and crispy and amazing). They're also pretty big, so you could definitely share and then have room for a pastry or one of their super good smoothies.

Sidecar donuts. I'm such a donut lover and since we moved here 3 1/2 years ago I've been on the hunt for the best donuts. I'd heard about Sidecar for months, but finally got around to trying it a few weeks ago. I've had a lot of donuts in my life, but these were far and away my very favorite. They have monthly specials, and this month I'd definitely recommend the raspberry and the salty caramel. Also, expect a little bit of a line, because they're crazy popular.

Bread crumb ohana cafe. I went here a few months ago for my friend's birthday brunch and with a table ten women, every single one of us got their North Shore french toast on Hawaiian bread. It's very best with strawberries, macadamia nuts, and coconut syrup. I'm drooling just thinking about it. Also, it's always packed, so make sure you plan accordingly!

Black market bakery. We happened upon this place randomly, but it was so so good. It has a fun, trendy vibe, and although seating is limited, they also have some places outside to sit if the weather is nice. We definitely recommend the scones!

La Petite Sourie. This place actually started our brunching tradition. It's a little hole in the wall in a grocery store shopping complex, but it's so yummy. It's not quite as amazing as C'est Si Bon Bakery, but it's still very authentic French. I recommend the french toast (it comes on sliced Baguettes), and then grabbing a box of macarons on your way out.

Now go use that $15 to Google Express, get your Saturday's back, and start brunching!

OUR FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND

This shop is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and Fruttare, but all my opinions are my own. #itsallgood #pmedia  http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV

Over the last few years, the Fourth of July has become one of my very favorite holidays. I don't make a big deal of every holiday, but there are a few where I like to dress up, make special food, and do holiday specific activities. This year we invited my sister, Janssen, and her family, and my parents to come celebrate with us for the weekend, and we did all of those things and then some.

Between the famous Huntington Beach parade, two beautiful mornings at the beach, lots of good food (including a BBQ in my backyard and homemade triple berry pie for dessert), fireworks on the beach, dinner downtown at our favorite italian joint, and lots of family time, we had an amazing weekend. Also, I could have slept for two days straight after all of that and still been tired. But it was worth it.

Before the weekend, we stopped in at Target and picked up a few essentials -- matching striped shirts for the boys, s'mores ingredients, and some strawberry and strawberry with milk Fruttare bars (which can also be purchased at most grocery stores nationwide).

On the morning of the parade, we packed up a cooler and brought along the bars, which were the perfect treat to help cool us off when the sun came out from behind the trees and we all got super hot.

That evening, we hung paper stars (tutorial here) from the twinkle lights and had an outdoor BBQ. It was perfect weather, the setting was magical, and I fell even more in love with outdoor entertaining.

We ended the weekend with s'mores, sparklers, and lots of giggles from two little cousin friends.

It was the perfect weekend! Happy birthday, America -- we sure do love you!

3 ESSENTIALS FOR A DAY AT THE BEACH WITH KIDS (AND A GIVEAWAY!)

When we first moved to Huntington Beach I was the worlds worst beach mom. No, seriously. The first time we went down to the beach with some new friends I was so completely unprepared it was comical. I wore a t-shirt and a maxi skirt, only to arrive and realize every other mom was in her bathing suit, I didn't bring a lunch, I had one towel, no extra clothing...I didn't even bring sunscreen. All the other moms had their beach chairs, a umbrellas, giant vats of baby powder, extra towels, extra sunscreen, and perfect little satchels of snacks. You guys, I was so completely clueless.

To make matters worse, my child was the only one to fall in the waves, so after diving in after him I was completely soaked, making my maxi skirt stretch out so drastically it could have fit nicely on Michael Jordan. I walked home from the beach that day in a t-shirt and a (borrowed) towel, with my maxi skirt draped over the stroller, which periodically slipped off and got caught in the stroller wheels. I was starving, exhausted, and embarrassed.

Now a year and a half later, I'm happy to consider myself a pretty adept beach mom.

These are three of our beach essentials that have made a huge difference in our beach experience:

1. Baby Powder

  • That first trip to the beach elicited some crazy stares when I asked why everyone had baby powder. Well it turns out I was the crazy one, cause that stuff is brilliant. Dust some on to your wet sandy children, rub it around, and almost instantly all the water is sucked out of the sand and it just falls off. Now I too carry around a giant vat of it.

2. Folding Backpack Beach Chair

  • We picked up two of these chairs shortly after the first beach day fiasco, and I can't live without them. They fold up into a backpack so I can carry them hands free, they have a big pouch on the back to carry all the (sandy) beach toys to and from the beach, and they're surprisingly comfortable.

3. Snacks

  • I don't know what it is about the beach, but the moment we get down there we are all starving -- even me. Even if we've just had breakfast. I can't explain it. So I've learned to always have a bag of snacks on hand. NatureBox sent us one of their monthly snack boxes and they were absolutely perfect for a day at the beach. Their individual packages were so easy to throw in the beach bag, great for my kids to sit on the beach towel and munch on, they're healthy (made completely of wholesome and unprocessed ingredients), and they're super delicious. Unless you're my baby, who ate nearly the entire bag of Cherry Berry Bonanza by himself, the bags are all full size and have 3-5 servings in them so they last for more than one beach trip. They have 3 different Box options -- Deluxe Snacker (5 bags for $19.95), Happy Snacker (10 bags for $29.95), and Smart Snacker (20 bags for $49.95), and you get to choose your snacks each month so you can try all different kinds! Our favorites were the Cherry Berry Bonanza, Everything Bagel Stix, and the Dark Cocoa Almonds. I'm drooling even thinking about them.

If that face doesn't convince you that you need to try these snacks, I don't know what will.

Today NatureBox is generously giving away 2 six-month Deluxe Snacker subscriptions to 2 lucky readers so you can have some delicious snackies for the beach this summer (or the park, or school, or hidden away in your bedroom so you don't have to share with your children -- I won't judge)!

To enter:
  • Visit NatureBox and browse their amazing collection of snacks, then come back here and leave a comment telling me which snack you want to try the most! You must include your email address in your comment to win!
this giveaway is open to US readers only

And if you can't wait, get 50% off your first box of any size with code MERRICK (valid only on first month's box, and only for new customers)!

Yesterday

Being a stay at home mom is not always an easy job. Many days are so great, but there is the big responsibility to teach your children, some days you never leave the house except to walk the twenty steps to the mailbox, and there are dirty diapers and scheduling and occasional tantrums to deal with.

But some days, everyone's schedules work together and you get invited to a lunch/playdate with several of your best friends, you eat delicious food, the babies play quietly and nicely together, and you get to sit together for a few hours and have wonderful conversation.

Yesterday was one of those days.

Yesterday was a great day.

p.s. Tonight I'm off to LA with my mom for a mom/daughter weekend at the Norton Simon Art Museum and the LA Fabric District. Eeee! Be prepared for a full report next week! Happy Weekend!

Eating For a Week

I mentioned on facebook the other day that it was a good week when your every item on the weeks dinner menu included fresh basil in some form.

Well then all the sudden everyone was wanting me to post my menu! Make this a new feature on my blog! Oh, all the ideas that I can share!

Gah, the pressure!

I have no intention of doing this on a weekly basis, but for this week I will indulge. Here is what I'm cooking this week for dinner.

Monday:
  • Pasta with Bacon and Asparagus [this was a new recipe for us, and definitely a keeper. But then again, how can you go wrong with pasta and bacon?? All three of us scarfed it down.]
  • homemade biscuits with jam
  • green grapes
Tuesday:
  • Grilled Chicken with Lemon Basil Pasta [another new recipe. Philip thought it was too lemony, but Peanut and I loved it. He's been asking for leftover "noo-noo's" all day!]
  • Spinach salad with candied almonds, craisins, and homemade poppyseed dressing
  • Fresh strawberries
Wednesday:
  • Basil Chicken in Coconut Curry Sauce over steamed rice [Philip was out of town for this dinner, and since he was in St. George, I was thinking about our last trip to St. George where I ate the most amazing curry at Benja's Thai. I tried not to compare, but I couldn't help myself. This was delicious, but not AS delicious as Benja's. I'll make it again and try to have an open mind].
  • Steamed asparagus
  • Fresh strawberries
Thursday:
Friday:
  • Homemade pizza (homemade sauce, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, jalapenos, fresh basil, and freshly grated parmesan cheese)
  • Fruit Smoothies

**I usually don't have so much pasta in one week, but that's just the way it turned out this week. Usually I try to have a good balance between pasta, rice, soups, etc, and also have a balance between different types of meats. I'll do better next week...**

Texas Trip (Part 2): Austin (aka. the trip of gluttony)

So, remember how I posted part 1 of our Texas Trip? And then I never posted part 2? Yeah...oops..here you go...

Our first full day in Austin, we headed over to the splash pad. Peanut is such a water baby, so he had the time of his life. And babies + water = camera happy Merrick...I nearly filled up my camera card in one afternoon!

The next day we headed to the library for a little cooler activity (although poor Ella was drenched in sweat from driving in the car...we later realized her a/c vent was closed. Parenting at its best).

That night we ate at Johnny T's BBQ, and reveled in their amazing ribs. Even Ella approved. Peanut was too busy charming the people in line to take a picture.

The following day we headed downtown for a visit to Flip Happy Crepes. The food trailer, colorful table umbrellas, and the chalkboard menu gave it a fun "Austin" vibe.

Since marrying Philip I have been much more adventurous in my food choices (seriously, all I used to eat was chicken fingers and salad), but I played it safe here with a nice ham and gruyere, and never was I more happy to have made a safe choice. It was amazing.

Also, we may or may not have gotten a banana, chocolate, almond crepe for dessert. And we may or may not have eaten it too fast to get a picture. And we may or may not have let Ella have a little taste...

Once our tummies were full, we headed down to the art museum on UT Austin campus.

Peanut and Ella particularly enjoyed the installation exhibit featuring an enclosure of black drapes, a floor of pennies, a central pillar made of sacrament wafers, and a ceiling of cow bones. We're pretty sure that neither of them ate any pennies during the visit of this exhibit...

The following day we headed to Zilker Park. The babies actually did enjoy the swings, despite the way it looks in this photo...

See??

Then we paid our $3 and took a little ride on the Zilker Zephyr -- a train that winds through the park.

On our way home we stopped by Mike's Tacos and were very impressed. The salsa nearly burned a hole in our tongues, but we forgave Mike when he gave us great service and even better tacos. Who knew potatoes in tacos could be so delicious??

The next morning we finished off our trip of immense gluttony by going to Kerbey Lane. We'd heard fantastic things about their gingerbread pancakes, but after trying those along with the raspberry pancake special, some french toast, a breakfast sandwich, and a few breakfast tacos, we decided the gingerbread pancakes were our least favorite of the bunch.

Then we flew home and everyone went on a diet. The end.
